"I was walking up and heard a lady screaming," a witness of the shooting said. "She was screaming and she was saying a lot of things."
A retired U.S. Army staff sergeant was fatally shot outside a Walmart in South Florida after an argument over a parking space escalated into violence, authorities have confirmed.
Bart Diguglielmo, 62, was killed on Tuesday outside a Walmart Supercenter in North Lauderdale after a verbal dispute with a woman turned deadly, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Investigators said the confrontation began shortly before 12:30 p.m. over a parking spot. The woman later told deputies she acted in self-defense. A video circulating on social media was obtained by WPLG and appears to show the two arguing in the parking lot before the woman, who was holding a handgun, fired a single shot. Diguglielmo can then be seen collapsing to the ground. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Witness David Anderson described a chaotic scene to CBS Miami following the shooting."I was walking up and heard a lady screaming," he said. "She was screaming and she was saying a lot of things." According to footage obtained by local media, Diguglielmo and the woman pointed at each other during the confrontation, with the retired veteran at one point raising both hands in the air before continuing around a parked vehicle as the woman kept her firearm trained on him.
Diguglielmo's family remembered him as a decorated Army veteran who served during Operation Desert Storm. "He was a Christian man and a very good person and would not hurt anyone," his sister told CBS. Originally from Hammonton, New Jersey, Diguglielmo served as a combat nurse, combat medic, and tactical communications specialist during his military career. He later worked as a registered nurse after retiring from the Army and was living in Lauderhill, Florida.
Authorities have not released the identity of the woman involved. The woman, who was detained for questioning, told authorities that she had shot the veteran in self-defense.
