A statement from China's embassy in Canada has condemned the House of Common's decision to declare China's actions against the Uyghurs a genocide, as voted on by 266 Canadian MPs.
The statement from the Chinese embassy condemns the decision, as well as any pressure being put on the International Olympic Committee over relocating the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.
The embassy writes that the decision was a "gross interference in China's internal affairs and a malicious provocation against the 1.4 billion Chinese people," and strongly condemned the "disgraceful move."
Rather than admit any wrongdoing in their treatment of the Uyghurs, the Chinese criticized Canada, stating "Instead, the Canadian side should ask itself when it comes to committing 'genocide' and reflect deeply on the miserable experience of its indigenous people."
"How hypocritical and despicable! They are still trying to continue to poke their nose into China in the 21st century. How arrogant and ignorant! They are hyping up the topic of Beijing Winter Olympics based on political lies, and politicizing sports, which completely runs counter to the Olympic Charter and jeopardizes the Olympics and the interests of athletes around the world. How selfish and narrow-minded!" the statement continues.
The embassy went on to write that the situation in Xinjian is about "combating violent terrorism and secession."
"We urge these politicians to face the fact, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, stop using the Xinjiang-related issue to seek their own interests, and stop engaging in the anti-China farce, otherwise they will end up humiliating themselves," the embassy statement concluded.
