The left-wing sports outlet that defamed a young Chiefs fan earlier in 2023 has been sold off to Lineup Publishing from its owning company G/O Media and the entire editorial staff will be fired.

According to a report from Axios, the G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller made the announcement to staff on Monday.

The layoffs of the editorial staff will include Carron J. Phillips, who in 2023 defamed a young Chiefs fan, saying that the child wore blackface when he really wore Chiefs' colors of red and black for a game.

The Deadspin CEO said that Lineup Publishing approached him about the company and that he was not “actively shopping Deadspin” around.

“The rationale behind the decision to sell included a variety of important factors that include the buyer's editorial plans for the brand, tough competition in the sports journalism sector, and a valuation that reflected a sizable premium from our original purchase price for the site," Spanfeller added.

"While the new owners plan to be reverential to Deadpin's unique voice, they plan to take a different content approach regarding the site's overall sports coverage," Spanfeller wrote in a memo.

G/O Media has been selling off other sites as well recently to shore up a return for their investors. Jezebel, another G/O Media owned company, also went through heavy restructuring last November and later sold it to Paste Magazine.

Last March it sold off the website Lifehacker to Ziff Davis and 13 of the staff members were let go in June.
