Three Democratic lawmakers from Congress were seen on the property.
Fox News’ Bill Melugin reported, "DHS tells Fox News two Democratic members of Congress have 'stormed' ICE’s Delaney Hall detention facility in New Jersey with a group of protesters and are currently holed up in/near a guard shack on the property. Fox is told the group waited for the gates to open to allow a bus with ICE detainees to enter the property, then they rushed in past security."
Melugin later shared a post from a third Democratic lawmaker, who openly shared video of herself at the facility. The three Democrats included Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), Lamonica McIver (D-NJ), and Rob Menendez (D-NJ).
According to posts from some of the lawmakers, they arrived at the ICE detention facility to conduct "oversight" as members of Congress.
"As congressional members, we have the power to conduct oversight. That’s what we’re here to do," McIver posted on X.
Coleman posted a video to social media as well, captioning a clip and photos, "We’re at Delaney Hall, an ICE prison in Newark that opened without permission from the city & in violation of local ordinances. We’ve heard stories of what it’s like in other ICE prisons. We’re exercising our oversight authority to see for ourselves."
Assistant Secretary Dept. of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin posted in response to the incident on X, "In a bizarre political stunt, as a bus of detainees entered the security gate of Delaney Hall Detention Center, a group of protestors, including 2 members of US Congress, stormed the gate and broke into the detention facility. The members, Robert Menendez Jr. and Bonnie Watson Coleman + multiple protestors holed up in a guard shack, the first security check point."
"This illegal breaking and entering of a detention facility puts the safety of our law enforcement agents and the detainees at risk. Members of Congress are not above the law and cannot illegally break into detention facilities. Had these members requested a tour, we would have facilitated a tour of the facility. This is an evolving situation," McLaughlin added.
During the events, Newark, New Jersey Mayor Ras Baraka, a Democrat, was also arrested after reportedly refusing to leave the facility after multiple requests from ICE agents.
