“It’s been an honor to be your mayor,” Adams said in a video message.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Sunday that he is dropping out of the mayoral race, folding to pressure from those who urged him to step aside in an effort to consolidate support against socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani.
“It’s been an honor to be your mayor,” Adams said in a video message. “Although our successes… I know I cannot continue my campaign.”
“I want to be clear, although this is the end of my campaign, this will not be the end of my public service,” he added.
Adams did not endorse another candidate but took subtle shots at both Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, cautioning voters against electing leaders who promote radical ideas.
The mayor will remain on the ballot for the November 4 ballot despite his campaign's suspension.
Adams has been continually facing calls to suspend his independent campaign amid concerns about the rising popularity of Mamdani. He had currently been polling fourth in the race behind Mamdani, Cuomo, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, according to the New York Post. Adams also significantly trailed both Mamdani and Cuomo in campaign fundraising.
The White House previously spoke about plans to see either Adams, Sliwa, or both drop out of the race to unify anti-Mamdani voters. President Donald Trump said earlier this month to reporters that he would like to see "two people drop out" of the mayoral race.
Cuomo is widely seen as the candidate most capable of beating Mamdani in a head-to-head matchup. However, Sliwa has pledged to continue to stay in the race as the GOP's nominee.
