Portland Public Schools taps drag queen ‘Poison Waters’ for back-to-school message

Portland Public Schools welcomed students back to the 2026-27 academic year with a social media video featuring a drag queen.

The school district shared a video on social media featuring drag queen Poison Waters, whose real name is Kevin Cook, describing the performer as an advocate, educator, and host. Waters has been an entertainer since the 1980s and has been involved in LGBTQ-related events for decades.

“I’m here to wish you all a successful 2026-2027 school year and to thank all the amazing principals, teachers, and staff for your dedication to your students and their learning,” Waters said. “While we can often get caught up in the hustle and bustle, it’s so important to remember that together we rise with excellence and purpose.”

The video continued with video messages from public figures, including Democratic Representative Maxine Dexter and Senator Jeff Merkley.

Waters has had an extensive history of involvement with children. According to Waters’ website, he has been volunteering at a camp for children affected by HIV/AIDS since 2001. Waters has also participated in “drag queen storytime” events for children.

In 2019, Waters participated in a drag queen storytime event in Portland that was advertised as a “child-friendly, all ages” show. Waters read “stories about diversity and inclusion,” had a “dance party” with the children, and held a Q&A. The event also encouraged children to wear “dress up accessories such as feather boas, tiaras, and wings.”

The inclusion of a drag queen in its message to students and parents comes as Portland Public Schools faces a lawsuit from a mother who accused the district of promoting “trans ideology in public schools.” The mother, Allison Roberts, filed the lawsuit earlier this month, arguing she was punished for criticizing the school’s gender policies.
