The FBI has said that there is "no definitive link" between the two attacks in New Orleans where Shamsud-Din Jabbar killed 15 and injured dozens driving a truck into a crowd and the explosion where Matthew Livelsberger set off an explosion while in a Cybertruck next to a Trump hotel in Las Vegas. An FBI spokesman said there is "no definite link" between the attacks in a press conference on in New Orleans on Thursday.
Links were sought between the two men after it was revealed that both Livelsberger and Jabbar rented their trucks via the Turo car sharing app and that they had both served in the US Armed Forces. It was also revealed that they had served on the same military base of Fort Bragg, though it's not clear if there was any overlap in that service. Both acts are being investigation as terrorist attacks.
On Tuesday, New Year's Day, two incidents occurred within hours of each other. What the FBI is calling a terrorist attack was carried out by Houston-based Shamsud-Din Jabbar who rented an F-150 on December 30. He drove from Houston to New Orleans on December 31, and during that drive he posted five videos to his Facebook account proclaiming his allegiance to ISIS. He also claimed that he had previously planned to kill his family.
At first it was reported that there may have been accomplices that worked with Jabbar, but it was later revealed by the FBI that he was likely working alone. He had reportedly constructed IEDs for the attack in addition to ramming the truck into the crowd.
Less is known about Livelsberger's motives. He was from Colorado and was an active member of the US Armed Forces, serving in special operations as a Green Beret. He was on leave from his base in Germany when he set off the explosive in Las Vegas.
This is a developing story.
