US District Judge Patrick Schlitz said that the “purpose” of the subpoenas was to “coerce Minnesota officials into assisting the federal government with enforcing civil immigration law and to harass and retaliate against them for failing to do so.”
"The U.S. Justice Department is pursuing criminal investigations into the President's political opponents. This case was just one example of that, but we are seeing daily reminders of this administration's lawlessness - in Minnesota and around the country. We all must continue to seek justice and uphold the rule of law," Walz said in a statement following the ruling.
He called the ruling a "victory for the rule of law and our democracy." Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who was also a subject of the subpoenas, said that "it should disturb every American that Donald Trump is weaponizing the criminal justice system against people he disagrees with."
The subpoenas were issued in January as part of an investigation to see if Walz or other state officials were implicated in obstructing ICE and other federal immigration enforcement.
In January, Minnesota become the epicenter of ICE enforcement activity where sanctuary policies led to the Trump administration surging ICE and other federal officers to the state in order to arrest and deport illegal immigrants. However, with the surge of federal law enforcement, there was heavy pushback from anti-ICE agitators and protests.
