Richard Simmons, the beloved fitness instructor who rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s, has passed away at the age of 76. Simmons died just one day after celebrating his birthday and had received messages from fans the day of.

Simmons was primarily known for his energetic personality and dozens of fitness tapes that sold more than 20 million copies. Upon rising to fame, he opened multiple gyms across the United States in an effort to help countless individuals embrace a healthier lifestyle. Earlier this year, Simmons also announced plans to open a Broadway musical.

His death, first reported by TMZ, is believed to be due to natural causes.
Simmons, who revealed earlier this year that he was diagnosed with skin cancer, was pronounced dead after the police arrived at his house upon a call from his housekeeper. Law enforcement stated that Simmons fell down on Friday night, which may have been related to his death as well.

Just this week, Simmons conducted a rare interview with People Magazine where he said he "feels good" despite his growing age. ”I am grateful that I’m here, that I am alive for another day,” he said in the interview. “I’ll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people.”
