Universal and Blumhouse‘s new thriller "Five Nights at Freddy’s" dominated the box office with a whopping $78 million domestic debut over Halloween weekend.
It raised another $52 million outside of the United States, bringing its international debut to $130 million, according to Variety.
The movie was expected to garner a minimum of $50 million, and now marks the largest horror debut of the year, beating out more well-known franchises like "Scream VI," which pulled in $44.4 million.
"Five Nights at Freddy’s" managed to pull off the second-largest premiering weekend for a video game adaptation, falling only behind "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which raised a blockbusting $146.3 million.
Scott Cawthon, who created the video game the movie is based on, has famously refused to bow to the mob and apologize for his donations to numerous conservative politicians, one of whom is former President Donald Trump, according to Newsweek.
In a post to Reddit on Saturday titled, "My response, and maybe last post," Cawthon said, "yes, I supported President Trump, because I felt he was the best man to fuel a strong economy and stand up to America's enemies abroad, of which there are many."
"I'm a republican. I'm a Christian. I'm pro-life. I believe in God," Cawthron explained in his post, per Newsweek. "I also believe in equality, and in science, and in common sense. Despite what some may say, all of those things can go together. That's not an apology or promise to change, it's the way it's always been."
"If I get cancelled, then I get cancelled. I don't do this for the money anymore; I do it because I enjoy it. If people think I'm doing more harm than good now, then maybe it's better that I get cancelled and retire. I would accept that. I've had a fulfilling career. Besides, most things that people can take from you are things that never had much value to begin with."
Hashtags of "#istandbyscott," began trending on X after Cawthorn's statement on Saturday.
