Dr. Noa Sterling, a board-certified OBGYN and founder of the Obi pregnancy and postpartum app, expressed sympathy to Clancy, saying in the video that she has three children of her own and knows "how much work it is even when you are mentally well."
"Hindsight is 20/20, but I don't know what else you could've done," said Sterling. "You were far beyond what should be expected of a single individual." She added that Clancy had "galvanized us women in a really powerful way," explaining to the defendant that "we are proud of how hard you advocated and how hard you tried for yourself." Additionally, Sterling said she has her own story to tell, but is not yet ready.
Clancy, 36, is accused of strangling her three small children to death with an exercise band while her husband, Patrick Clancy, was in the store. She then jumped from a second-story window. Clancy survived the fall, but was left paralyzed. Her children were five years, three years, and eight months old.
Her defense team contended that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, as well as other mental diseases like bipolar disorder, and hence should not be held accountable. Prosecutors claimed Clancy acted with intent and planned the murders.
This case has sparked an outpouring of support for Clancy from primarily liberal women who have banded together to discuss their own postpartum experiences, including intrusive thoughts of wanting to kill their own children, much like Clancy. Critics denounced the support as disgusting, pointing out that Clancy had sought aid and hired a babysitter to care for her children.
Sterling's statements sparked outrage, primarily from conservative critics. Some demanded that she be deprived of her medical license.
