California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that his administration is suing President Donald Trump for deploying members of the California National Guard to Oregon.

“BREAKING: We’re suing Donald Trump,” Newsom posted on X Sunday. “His deployment of the California National Guard to Oregon isn’t about crime. It’s about power.”

“He is using our military as political pawns to build up his own ego,” Newsom added. “It’s appalling. It’s un-American. And it must stop.”

The lawsuit follows the Trump administration’s decision to federalize 300 California National Guard troops and send them to Oregon. This move came one day after US District Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump appointee, issued an order blocking the deployment of Oregon’s own National Guard to Portland. The judge’s injunction remains in effect until at least October 18.

"This country has a longstanding and foundational tradition of resistance to government overreach, especially in the form of military intrusion into civil affairs,” Judge Immergut wrote in her ruling.

The efforts to deploy National Guard troops to Oregon come as anti-ICE protesters have continued to overwhelm an ICE facility in Portland, with numerous instances of protests turning violent and clashing with immigration agents.

The Trump administration has faced mounting opposition from Democratic governors and local officials over its recent efforts to deploy National Guard forces in response to violent crime and unruly anti-immigration enforcement protests. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also criticized the president’s actions after Trump announced plans to send National Guard troops into Chicago.

“It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will,” Pritzker said in a statement on Saturday.
