Shots were fired near former President Donald Trump at his International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. Trump, who was golfing at the time of the incident, was not harmed.

"Sources said the Secret Service spotted a suspicious individual on the Trump International Golf Course West Palm Beach, and opened fire when agents saw what appeared to be the barrel of a gun," a source told The New York Post.

Agents at the golf course spotted a suspect in the tree line who was in possession of an AK-style rifle, according to sources who spoke to Charlie Kirk. Secret Service agents fired at the suspect, who dropped his rifle and immediately fled. The suspect managed to escape agents before eventually being apprehended by law enforcement.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” clarified Trump spokesman Steven Cheung on Sunday. Trump safely returned to Mar-a-Lago after the incident, which is located about five miles away from the golf course.

The New York Post initially reported that the shooting involved two individuals who exchanged gunfire outside the course and was not targeting the former president. However, the outlet has since reported that Secret Service agents opened fire on a suspicious individual who appeared to be in possession of a gun.

"The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 pm. The former president is safe," said Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the Secret Service.

Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder stated that the suspect was quickly apprehended after the FBI, Secret Service, and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office released an alert that included details of a vehicle. A patrol unit quickly identified the vehicle and took the suspect into custody, according to the Associated Press. The suspect was not armed when he was apprehended nor did he question why he was pulled over.

The Trump campaign did not advise Trump's golfing plans for Sunday.

In response to developing reports of the incident, the White House issued a statement: “The president and vice president have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe.”

News of a shooting near Trump comes just two months after the former president survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, leaving him with a wounded ear.
