Guy Lafleur, one of the biggest icons of the whole NHL's history, has sadly passed away at age 70 after fighting a losing battle with lung cancer.

Lafleur made hockey history as part of the storied dynasty that was the Montreal Canadiens in their heydey, during the period of 1971 to 1985, in which they won an incredible seven Stanley Cups, that is to say, on average, one every two years.

He is widely considered to be one of the greatest hockey players of all time, and part of the triumvirate of the three best players to even play for the Canadiens, along with Maurice "Rocket" Richard and Jean Beliveau.

Lafleur was born to a working-class family in the paper-mill town of Thurso Quebec, but was "born to wear the CH," according to fellow hockey great Red Fisher, who is also no longer with us, as cited by the Montreal Gazette.

"What could be better? A poor boy from a pulp-and-paper town continuing the line of pre-eminent French-Canadian superstars. He was right for the times, bringing as much glory to the sweater as any of the great players before him or since," commented Fisher in a 2005 article.
