"We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that."
At a rally in Tennessee on Saturday, President Donald Trump joked that his next rebranding project may be one of the biggest yet. He floated the possibility of renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean.
“So we've got, we've got the Gulf. We've got a beautiful lake. Now somebody said, ‘You need a river’,” Trump said, appearing to think out loud.
“So, I don't want to change the name of the Hudson River, that's too much. Henry Hudson, he did a good job setting up that sucker a long time ago,” Trump continued. “So we need a river, we need an ocean. So, I was thinking of either the Atlantic or the Pacific — we call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that.”
Trump went on to reassure voters that he had no intention of renaming the Mississippi River, which forms Tennessee’s western border with Arkansas as it runs from Minnesota all the way to Louisiana.
“Now I'm not changing the name of the Mississippi,” he said. “I love Mississippi. We won that state by so much and we, we, we won, honestly we won them all.”
Trump’s previous renaming projects include the former Gulf of Mexico (now the Gulf of America) and Lake Ontario (now Lake America).
Reaction has been mixed, with Democrats and other countries widely panning the changes.
“I'm speechless. It is so patently absurd,” Democrat New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in reaction to the Lake America proclamation.
“Shame on them for deflecting from the real needs that Americans are feeling that we have here in New York,” she added. “The high cost of energy, prescription drugs, utility bills, groceries. And this is what the president spends his time on? Renaming a lake that was named after our Indigenous peoples. Shame on you.”
Trump also has urged people to use a more precise name for the former “artificial intelligence.”
“The White House considers anyone that uses the term, ‘Artificial Intelligence,’ as opposed to the highly accepted new and more accurate term, ‘Super Intelligence,’ THE ENEMY!” Trump said in a Truth Social post on Thursday.
