GOP members voted against Jordan for nominees like Steve Scalise, Lee Zeldin, and Kevin McCarthy.
On Tuesday afternoon, the House underwent the first vote to select its speaker, this coming around two weeks after Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the role. No speaker nominee had enough votes to be elected after the first round.
GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik nominated Jim Jordan on the floor, while Democrat Rep. Pete Aguilar nominated House Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Reps. Lori Chavez-Deremer McCarthy, Don Bacon, Carlos Gimenez, Jennifer Kiggans, Mike Lawler, and Doug LaMalfa voted for Kevin McCarthy. Reps. Anthony D'Esposito, Andrew Garbarino, and Nick LaLota voted for former US Rep. Lee Zeldin. Reps. Mario Díaz-Balart, Tony Gonzalez, Kay Granger, Mike Kelly, John Henry Rutherford, Mike Simpson, and Steve Womack voted for Steve Scalise, who dropped out last week from consideration. Rep Jake Ellzey voted for Mike Garcia. Rep Ken Buck voted for Tom Emmer, while Rep John James voted for Tom Cole and Victoria Spartz voted for Thomas Massie.
According to CNN, with 217 votes needed to elect the House speaker and 220 GOP House members in the voting session, Jordan can only afford to lose three votes.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
