Edwards wrote that he was stepping down “to uphold my oath to the Constitution and the country.”
Troy Edwards, son-in-law of former FBI Director James Comey, resigned from his post as a federal prosecutor Thursday shortly after Comey was indicted on obstruction of justice and perjury charges.
Edwards was deputy chief of the National Security Section in the Eastern District of Virginia, a division that handles major espionage and intelligence cases involving the Pentagon and CIA headquarters. In a short resignation letter to Acting US.Attorney Lindsey Halligan, Edwards wrote that he was stepping down “to uphold my oath to the Constitution and the country.”
Halligan, whose office is prosecuting the case, said earlier that the charges against Comey represent “a breach of the public trust at an extraordinary level.”
Comey’s indictment stems from his 2020 testimony to Congress, where prosecutors allege he misled lawmakers about FBI leaks to the Wall Street Journal in 2016. Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has said Comey approved the leaks, contradicting Comey’s sworn statements.
President Trump reacted to the indictment in a post on X, writing, “JUSTICE IN AMERICA! One of the worst human beings this Country has ever been exposed to is James Comey … Today he was indicted by a Grand Jury on two felony counts for various illegal and unlawful acts.”
FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is working to “confront the problem head-on,” while Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “No one is above the law.”
