Maine Governor Janet Mills announced on Thursday morning that she is suspending her Democratic primary campaign for US Senate. The move means Maine’s Senate race will likely come down to Democrat candidate Graham Platner and incumbent GOP Senator Susan Collins.

"When I decided to run for the United States Senate last year, it was because I believed Maine people were getting a bad deal from Washington and because the President of the United States was threatening our democracy and pushing our nation to the brink of disaster. I continue to believe that today," Mills wrote.

"While I have the drive and passion, commitment and experience, and above all else — the fight — to continue on, I very simply do not have the one thing that political campaigns unfortunately require today: the financial resources. That is why today I have made the incredibly difficult decision to suspend my campaign for the United States Senate." Per CNN, Platner raised $4.1 million in the first quarter of 2026, while Mills raised $2.7 million.

Platner has come under fire for past social media posts he made, as well as for a tattoo that he had on his chest that resembled a Nazi symbol, a tattoo that he had covered up only after backlash.

Collins told reporters at the Capitol, "I’m sure this was a very difficult decision for Gov. Mills. And I wish her well. She has devoted her life to public service in the state of Maine, in many different capacities. She has served the people of our state and I’m sure this was a hard decision for her."

This is a breaking story.
