Vice President and Democrat nominee for president Kamala Harris stepped to a prepared podium outside of the vice presidential residence in Washington, DC on Wednesday, spread hoaxes about her opponent former President Donald Trump's alleged claims about Hitler, took no questions, and went back inside. The remarks were brief, barely three minutes, and recycled claims made in an Atlantic article on Tuesday.

"Trump's former chief of staff, John Kelly, a retired four-star general, confirmed that while Donald Trump was president, he said he wanted generals like Adolf Hitler had," Harris told the press. Many spoke out against the Atlantic article, including former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Trump press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

"Donald Trump said that because he does not want a military that is loyal to the United States Constitution. He wants a military that is loyal to him. He wants a military who will be loyal to him personally, one that will obey his orders even when he tells them to break the law or abandon their oath to the Constitution of the United States," Harris continued.

"In just the past week, Donald Trump has repeatedly called his fellow Americans 'the enemy from within,' and even said that he would use the United States military to go after American citizens. And let's be clear about who he considers to be 'the enemy from within': anyone who refuses to bend a knee or dares to criticize him would qualify, in his mind, as 'the enemy within,' like judges, like journalists, like non-partisan election officials," she said without evidence.

"It is deeply troubling and incredibly dangerous that Donald Trump would invoke Adolf Hitler, the man who is responsible for the deaths of 6 million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Americans. All of this is further evidence for the American people of who Donald Trump really is," she said, again without evidence.

"This is a window into who Donald Trump really is, from the people who know him best, from the people who worked with him side by side in the Oval Office and in the Situation Room. And it is clear from John Kelly's words that Donald Trump is someone who, I quote, 'certainly falls into the general definition of fascists,' who in fact vowed to be a dictator on day one and vowed to use the military as his personal militia to carry out his personal and political vendettas," she said, though this is not true.

"Donald Trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable," she said, "and in a second term, people like John Kelly would not be there to be the guard rails against his propensities and his actions. Those who once tried to stop him from pursuing his worst impulses would no longer be there and no longer be there to rein him in. So the bottom line is this, we know what Donald Trump wants. He wants unchecked power. The question, in 13 days will be, what do the American people want? Thank you." With that, she turned and walked back inside without taking any questions from the waiting press who had assembled to hear her remarks.

The article she referenced without naming it was one that claimed Trump told an aide during his White House years that he needed "the kind of generals that Hitler had." The article references the killing of a young woman, an Army private, who was killed by a fellow soldier. Trump spoke to the family, offered financial help with the funeral services, and The Atlantic writes that a few months later, he claimed that the funeral had been too costly, saying "It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks to bury a f*cking Mexican."

The family of the private refuted that, with the sister of the slain woman saying "I don’t appreciate how you are exploiting my sister’s death for politics- hurtful & disrespectful to the important changes she made for service members. President Donald Trump did nothing but show respect to my family & Vanessa. In fact, I voted for President Trump today."

The Atlantic goes on to say that sources told them that Trump claimed "I need the kind of generals that Hitler had." The author notes that others told him that this claim was "absolutely false" and that "Trump never said this." The author of the Atlantic piece claims that two other authors, who wrote a book about the Trump years, said that John Kelly, who was Chief of Staff from 2017 to 2019, told them that Trump quipped to him "why can't you be like the German generals?" The authors the Atlantic references then claim that Kelly explained some Third Reich history to Trump, who was unfamiliar with the ins and outs of that regime's internal operations.

The Atlantic's author said that he spoke with Kelly for clarity, writing "This week, I asked Kelly about their exchange. He told me that when Trump raised the subject of 'German generals,' Kelly responded by asking, 'Do you mean Bismarck’s generals?' He went on: 'I mean, I knew he didn’t know who Bismarck was, or about the Franco-Prussian War. I said, ‘Do you mean the Kaiser’s generals? Surely you can’t mean Hitler’s generals? And he said, ‘Yeah, yeah, Hitler’s generals.’ I explained to him that Rommel had to commit suicide after taking part in a plot against Hitler.' Kelly told me Trump was not acquainted with Rommel."

As for comments about "the enemy within," which Harris has invoked countless times over the past few days as the election comes to a close, Trump has spoken out against former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who serves as a powerful congresswoman from California, and Adam Schiff, a California congressman running for the US Senate. Both of these lawmakers have attempted to impeach Trump and to aid those who seek his criminal prosecution. Pelosi, he said, was supposed to protect the Capitol on January 6, 2021, which she did not do, later admitting that she regretted not calling in the National Guard.

For Harris, this article warranted brief remarks to press from her official residence, a refusal to answer questions, and expansive, new rhetoric designed to attempt to sway voters to her campaign.
