Kevin McCarthy will reportedly not stand for speaker a second time. After a contentious, 16 time vote to gain the speakership in January, and being ousted by his own party on Tuesday, the former Speaker will make a closed door announcement to fellow Republican House members.

Florida's Matt Gaetz brought the motion to vacate the speaker's chair on Monday night, and there was a vote on Tuesday in the House during which a counter motion was brought by an Oklahoma representative to table it. The vote to table did not pass, and a vote was held after remarks by Gaetz and those who supported McCarthy.

McCarthy lost that vote, with a handful of his own party voted to oust him and the entirety of the Democrats doing the same. The final vote was 216 in favor to remove him, 210 opposed. In his stead, North Carolina's Patrick McHenry will serve as Speaker pro tempore.

Fox News reported that they have no real idea who will run in his stead.

Gaetz said that his main concern is funding for Ukraine. While no funds were included in the 45-day stop gap measure passed on Friday to keep the government open, Gaetz alleges that a secret deal has been made, which was alluded to by President Joe Biden, in which McCarthy said that Ukraine funding would be authorized.

"I agree with you we need serious change," Marjorie Taylor Greene said, who did not vote to oust McCarthy, "but there is no plan and no one capable even stepping up. Last time Freedom Caucus threw out a Speaker, we ended up with Paul Ryan who did not support President Trump’s agenda. Nothing can truly change until Trump is back in the WH."

McCarthy believed he would be removed. During the lengthy series of votes in January that gained him the chair, many other names were proposed, such as Byron Donalds, Jim Jordan, and even Donald Trump, who was proposed by Gaetz. None of them had the votes.

It is unclear if Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, of Brooklyn, will be proposed by Democrats, though they do not have the votes either.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
