Rubio will join others who have already been named to key White House positions.
Florida Senator Marco Rubio is expected to be named by Donald Trump as Secretary of State. Rubio joins others who have already been named to key White House positions, including Susie Wiles, Stephen Miller, Tom Homan, Lee Zeldin, Elise Stefanik, and Mike Waltz.
The New York Times broke the news, saying that the information on Rubio is per three sources "familiar" with Trump's "thinking." Rubio was a surrogate for Trump on the campaign trail. Rubio has been in the Senate since 2010 and is known to be a hardliner on China and Iran. He has also stated that he is interested in bringing the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to an end, as has Trump. He came out of the Tea Party movement, which was a populist predecessor to MAGA.
While Trump and Rubio have at times been at odds, that rift was repaired during Trump's first White House term. Neither Trump nor Rubio have yet commented on the Times report.
Florida Senator Rick Scott reacted to the news with a hearty congratulations on Monday evening.
"I’m thrilled for my friend, Florida colleague, and our next Secretary of State @marcorubio! He will restore American leadership around the world, especially in Latin America, as he represents the United States with dignity and courage! It’s been an honor to serve the people of Florida alongside him and look forward to continuing our work together."
Per the NYT, "Mr. Trump could still change his mind at the last minute, the people said, but appeared to have settled on Mr. Rubio, whom he also considered when choosing his running mate this year."
Rubio becomes the first Latino Secretary of State.
