Update: Visa has now suspended use of its cards until a pending investigation is completed.

Mastercard said on Thursday that it will no longer allow transactions with PornHub after having "confirmed the presence of illegal material" on the site.

Nicholas Kristof, of The New York Times, wrote that Mastercard "is immediately ending" its card's use on Pornhub," and that it would "address the issue on other websites."

"This wouldn't have happened without survivors bravely speaking up," Kristoff wrote. Women have complained to Pornhub about explicit videos of themselves having been shared on the site without their knowledge or permission, and in some cases, the videos were of acts perpetrated against them without their consent.

Mastercard stated: "Today, the use of our cards at Pornhub is being terminated.  Our investigation over the past several days has confirmed violations of our standards prohibiting unlawful content.... we continue to investigate potential illegal content on other websites."

Pornhub has recently claimed that it doesn't allow, condone or encourage content produced without consent or underage content of any kind. Pornhub also said that as of the new year it will stop allowing unverified users from uploading content to the site. That is too late for the the credit card giant, which decided that the website was unacceptable as a partner.

For some, the only question remaining is why other creditors are allowing customers to spend their dollars on the site.

"Credit to @Mastercard for responsiveness. What’s up with @Visa?"
