"At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression."
Matthew Perry, the actor known for his role in "Friends" and who openly battled issues with alcohol and drugs over the years, passed away due to the immediate impacts of ketamine, an anesthetic known for its psychedelic properties, according to the autopsy report released on Friday by the Los Angeles County medical examiner's office.
The New York Times reports: "The medical examiner’s office said that drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of an opioid, buprenorphine, had contributed to his death.
"But the autopsy ascribed his death primarily to 'the acute effects of ketamine.' Ketamine is a powerful anesthetic that has become increasingly popular as an alternative therapy for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and other hard-to-treat mental health problems. It is also used recreationally."
Law enforcement found Perry in the jacuzzi at his California home near Los Angeles on October 28. First-responders rushed to the scene after being notified of a potential cardiac arrest.
“At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression,” the autopsy report said.
In the autopsy report, it was revealed that Perry had undergone ketamine infusion therapy. However, the presence of ketamine in his system could not be attributed to his most recent therapy session, which occurred approximately a week and a half before his demise, as per the findings.
His off-screen addiction caused turmoil among the Friends cast, involving the use of drugs, alcohol, and painkillers, along with multiple rehab stints. In his memoir titled "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," Perry recounted his struggles and triumphs, addressing his challenges candidly and striving to assist others.
During his appearances on talk shows to discuss the book, Perry frequently became emotional, shedding tears as he delved into the difficulties he encountered and expressed his own regrets. Despite this, the Friends cast members consistently stood by him.
Following its release in 2022, the book became a New York Times bestseller. Perry expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love and support from his fans during that time.
