BREAKING: NYC police commissioner to resign after FBI searches home

New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban announced he would resign on Thursday after a probe into people around NYC Mayor Eric Adams to have their homes searched by the FBI.

Caban made the choice to resign after "news around recent developments” had “created a distraction for our department,” an internal email obtained by the New York Post stated.



"I am unwilling to let my attention be on anything other than our important work, or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD,” he wrote. “I hold immense respect and gratitude for the brave officers who serve this department, and the NYPD deserves someone who can solely focus on protecting and serving New York City, which is why — for the good of this city and this department — I have made the difficult decision to resign as Police Commissioner."

The FBI seized Caban's phone during the search of his residence last week amid several other searches of officials close to Adams. According to the Post, Caban is expected to submit a letter of resignation on Thursday to be effective on Friday. 

Ahead of his statement, there were rumblings that Caban would be resigning from the position. This is despite Adams denying rumors about the commissioner's resignation earlier this week.

In a statement to the Post, Caban wrote, "[I] decided it is in the best interest of the Department that I resign as Commissioner. After 30 years of service to this city, I hold immense respect and gratitude for its brave officers, and must put their interests before my own."

He continued. “I believe firmly in the vital role of leaders with integrity, who, by example, demonstrate the difference between right and wrong every day. I will continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.”
