BREAKING: O'Toole says 'small group of activists' using Canada's past injustices to 'attack the very idea of Canada'

"As someone who served Canada, and will soon ask for the trust to lead this country, I can't stay silent when people want to cancel Canada Day," he said.

Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole addressed his party's caucus and media on Parliament Hill on Wednesday, where he said that he was concerned over the intentions of some activists.

"I am concerned that injustices in our past or in our present are too often seized upon by a small group of activist voices who use it to attack the very idea of Canada itself," he said.

"We're seeing news this week of Canada Day celebrations being cancelled. Canada Day," O'Toole emphasized.

"As someone who served Canada, and will soon ask for the trust to lead this country, I can't stay silent when people want to cancel Canada Day," he said.

"There is not a place on this planet whose history can withstand close scrutiny. But there is a difference in acknowledging where we've fallen short."

Recently, some cities in British Columbia have cancelled Canada Day celebrations, such as Penticton and Victoria BC. Mayor of Penticton John Vassilaki said that when he heard about the discovery of remains in Kamloops of 215 children, he "thought it was appropriate to hold back and wait to see what the federal government was going to announce."

CBC added that "the federal government has not announced any plans to cancel national celebrations" as of yet.

The Trudeau Liberals have not indicated at all that there was plans to denounce Canada Day. BC Premier John Horgan urged other cities in the province to not cancel the holiday, and to instead use June 21 as a day of reflection.

"The 21st of June, National Indigenous Peoples Day, would be a more appropriate time for us to collectively focus on how we can redress the wrongs of the past and build a brighter future together," he said on June 11.
