Police have captured the man who allegedly murdered UCLA student Brianna Kupfer.

On Wednesday morning, the Los Angeles Police Department put out a call asking for help finding Shawn Laval Smith, the man accused of killing 24-year-old UCLA student Brianna Kupfer.

Just hours later, Smith was captured.

In a tweet, the LAPD announced that the Pasadena Police Department had "located and detained" Smith around 11:50am PST.

He is currently in custody.

Smith allegedly stabbed Kupfer to death last week at the Croft House furniture store in Hancock Part, where she worked. According to Fox News, Kupfer sent a text message to a friend just moments before the attack saying that the man, Smith, was making her feel uncomfortable. Sadly, her friend did not receive the text in time and was unable to assist.

According to police, Smith fled the scene, and it was 20 minutes later that Kupfer's body was discovered "in a pool of blood" by a customer.

Los Angeles County records show that Smith has a criminal record and was free on a $1,000 bail from an October 2020 misdemeanor. Per the Daily Mail, it is not immediately clear what the nature of his charge is, or why the case remained unresolved.

In an interview with Fox News, Brianna’s father, Todd Kupfer, blamed politicians for his daughter’s murder.

"Crime is truly spiking, and we have a lot of criminals on the streets that shouldn’t be out," Kupfer said. "We have a lot of politicians that somehow forgot about people and think the key to getting elected is to support the lowest rung of our society and to give them rights and somehow that’s the answer to getting votes."
