The prison escapee is now armed with a stolen .22 calibre rifle.
Cavalcante, 34, was spotted by numerous residents in the area Monday night, prompting an extensive search that has gone on through the night.
During a press conference Tuesday morning, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens explained that late Monday night, a resident spotted a man crouched on the side of the road, but when she went back to check again, he was gone. Cavalcante's prison shoes were located nearby, and another resident soon reported that a pair of work boots had been stolen from his garage.
Cavalcante proceeded to enter a garage where the homeowner was inside. The homeowner opened fire, and Cavalcante grabbed a rifle and fled. He is not believed to be injured.
Notices have since been sent out via telephone and social media to those living in the search area asking them to remain indoors for their own safety. Schools in the Owen J Roberts School District were also instructed to close for the day.
In a notice to parents posted on the Spring-Ford Area School District website, Superintendent Bob Rizzo announced that outdoor activities would be moved inside on Tuesday, and that decisions on school athletics would be made later in the day.
The current search area is bordered by PA 23 to the north, PA 100 to the east, Fairview and Nantmeal Roads to the south, and Ironbridge and County Park Roads to the west.
Bivens noted that because the search area is heavily wooded, locating the armed suspect will be a challenge. He added that officers have surrounded the perimeter, should Cavalcante try to escape.
Originally from Brazil, Cavalcante was convicted of murdering his former girlfriend in front of her children in 2021 and sent to Chester County Prison, from where he escaped.
The reward for his capture was recently raised to $25,000.
