Politico isn't the first name that comes to mind when you think of state-backed media. You think of National Public Radio, or the Public Broadcasting System, but not an inside-the-Beltway founded in 2007, bought by a German media group in 2021, with publications spanning the US, UK, Canada and EU. But Politico has been funded by the US government through the purchase of subscriptions that were used across multiple agencies.

At the White House press briefing on Wednesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the federal government would no longer be subsidizing these subscriptions for Politico.

Kyle Becker broke the news of the Politico payments on X, revealing that the outlet had received $8.1 million over 237 transactions from multiple agencies and subagencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services, Department of the Interior, Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Food and Drug Administration, Office of the Secretary, Departmental Offices, Department of Transportation, and Department of State.

A great deal of this money was spent on subscriptions to PoliticoPro, via FEDLINK Schedule LCFDL19D0071, which also provides subscription services for Thomson Reuters Checkpoint FedPro. The State Department, Becker notes, was the second largest purchaser. A search through purchase orders from government agencies to Politico reveals that multiple subscriptions were purchased across agencies.

PolitcoPro offers "news, insights, and smart customizations to drive your policy forward," per the marketing materials for the product. It also tracks legislative bills, "detailed policy newsletters," etc.

Elon Musk shared Becker's post, saying "Not for long. This is obviously a huge waste of taxpayer money!" Musk has been making cuts to funding across the government, most recently with USAID, which is now under control of the State Department.

Details from USSpending.gov show that the "recipient," classified as Internet Publishing and Broadcasting, received all of these funds from 2016 through 2024, with the largest awards coming from 2020 to 2024 and a very steep drop-off for fiscal year 2025. The Trump administration canceled awards and grants for domestic enterprises via a memo from the Office of Management and Budget last week, although that order was withdrawn.

Politico has been largely anti-Trump during its publication history. Most notably, in 2020, they published a letter signed by 51 current and former intelligence officials claiming that a report by the New York Post revealing details from a found laptop of Hunter Biden's had all the "hallmarks" of "Russian disinformation." The official who started the letter and obtained the signatures, however, had been contacted by then Biden campaign aide Antony Blinken who asked that former official if he didn't think that the laptop could be "Russian disinfo" and asked him to write a letter to that effect.

The official did that. Biden won the election. Blinken went on to become Secretary of State. Politico published the letter.

The letter was used by many other outlets, such as NPR, the Washington Post, The New York Times, and others to explain why they didn't believe the New York Post's reporting either. The New York Post was right. All the outlets that leaned on the letter to say the Post was wrong had to rescind, recant, apologize, and admit they were wrong. Politico never issued a correction. Those 51 intel officials have all had their security clearances revoked by the Trump administration.

The anti-Trump bent of Politico's reporting means that the subcriptions being paid for by the Biden administration across multiple federal agencies were delivering anti-Trump, anti-conservative news, views, and analysis to government officials tasked with making decisions on spending and policy for America and the world.
