Mueller's family revealed last year that he had been suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.
Robert Mueller, the special counsel who investigated allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election, died Friday at the age of 81.
While an official cause of death has not yet been publicly released, Mueller's family revealed last year that he had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for several years.
"Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the summer of 2021. He retired from the practice of law at the end of that year. He taught at his law school alma mater during the fall of both 2021 and 2022, and he retired at the end of 2022," a family statement provided to the New York Times last year stated.
Mueller had been subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee to testify as part of their investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. However, that request was withdrawn after his health struggles were revealed.
Mueller served as the FBI director from 2001 to 2013. After President Donald Trump was elected to his first term, Mueller conducted a two-year probe into claims that Russia had interfered in the election to benefit Trump's campaign. The report concluded that Russia had interfered in the election via a social media campaign, but did not find any evidence that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government.
Trump responded to the news of Mueller's death on Saturday, writing in a post on Truth Social, "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I'm glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!"
This is a breaking story.
