Schumer has been under persistent fire from his own Democrat Party after 8 senators defected for the vote to reopen. Rumors have swirled that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will seek his seat in 2028 and Indivisible, as well as other left-wing non-profit groups, have vowed to work toward his ouster from Democratic leadership.
Schumer has not said whether he plans to retire or run again. But according to the report, Senate Democrats “have no expectation he’ll run again” once his term is up in 2028.
The report notes that there is no active effort to remove Schumer, and no clear challenger is preparing to take his position.
