Following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at an outdoor rally in Pennsylvania, Secret Service officials have reportedly urged Trump’s campaign to cease holding large outdoor events with big crowds.
Secret Service agents reportedly expressed their concerns to Trump campaign advisors over having large outdoor rallies going forward, three people familiar with the matter told the Washington Post.
Trump’s team is reportedly looking at venues such as large arenas for future events, and currently has no large outdoor events planned. Campaign advisors noted that indoor rallies are more expensive. One campaign official told the outlet that despite the cost, indoor venues are safer because it’s easier to control who goes in and out.
“Obviously with an indoor venue, you have a capacity,” she said. “It doesn’t pack the same punch. There’s something about being at one of those outdoor rallies.”
On July 13 at a rally in Butler, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a nearby roof, hitting Trump in the ear, killing former fire chief Corey Comperatore, and injuring two others. Following grilling from lawmakers on Monday and increasing calls to step down, Kimberly Cheatle resigned from her position as the head of the United States Secret Service.
