Following an active shooter situation at a high school in Perry, Iowa on Thursday morning, Sheriff Adam Infante provided an update.

He confirmed that there were "multiple gunshot victims," but noted that there was "no further danger" to the residents of the town about 35 miles northwest of Des Moines.

Infante explained that an officer arrived on the scene within seven minutes of the original report of an active shooter situation and "located multiple gunshot victims."

He noted that authorities are "still unclear exactly how many are injured, or what the extent of those are."

"There is no further danger to the public," Infante added, reiterating that "the community is safe."

He ended the press conference by explaining that more information would be released in the afternoon, and while he originally refused to take questions, he did confirm that authorities had identified the shooter.

According to the Daily Mail, law enforcement sources said at least one person has been killed and at least two injured in the shooting. MercyOne Medical Center in the state's capital has confirmed that they are preparing to treat people impacted by the shooting.

As the Des Moines Register reports, a first responder told dispatchers there was a "male subject down in the hallway" near Room 308 with a wound that "appears to be self-inflicted." They were said to have "other victims" as well. Not long after, the first responder claimed the suspect was "down and deceased."

Streets surrounding the school were blocked off, and a UnityPoint Health LifeFlight helicopter was spotted landing on the grounds.

In a statement to NBC News, Perry Community School District board president Linda Andorf called the incident "horrendously awful."

"People need to figure out their life," she added. "This is just disgusting. It's terrible."

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
