Socialist Omar Fateh has lost his bid to become mayor of Minneapolis. Jacob Frey, the incumbent mayor, has won reelection.

Fateh wrote on Wednesday afternoon, "Thank you, Minneapolis! While this wasn’t the outcome we wanted, I am incredibly grateful to every single person who supported our grassroots campaign. I’ll keep fighting alongside you to build the city we deserve. Onward."

Unofficial results released by the city on Wednesday afternoon showed that Frey won reelection with 50.03 percent of the vote to Fateh’s 44.37 percent.

Fateh had said that "the only way to stand up to Trump and his posse of unelected billionaires is to create a city that is radically inclusive and stands up for those who are most at risk," promising to protect illegal immigrants, increasing funding for services to "LGBTQ+ and BIPOC people," and ensuring that the city "remains a safe-haven for people seeking abortions and gender-affirming care."

The socialist's loss in Minneapolis comes as fellow socialist Zohran Mamdani won his bid to become New York City mayor, defeating Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. Among the campaign promises made by Mamdani were city-run grocery stores, free childcare, rent freezes, a $30 per hour minimum wage, and other promises.
