BREAKING: Steve Scalise withdraws from House Speaker's race

Rep Steve Scalise has reportedly withdrawn his name from the House Speaker's race. Laura Ingraham interrupted her broadcast to make the announcement that Scalise had withdrawn from the race.

This comes after days of House GOP discussions behind closed doors where the members attempted to get on the same page as regards a speaker. Scalise had won the nomination in a 113-99 vote, but many members had issues with that decision. Rep Jim Jordan was a favorite of many in the caucus.

Minnesota's Tom Emmer, who serves as Minority Whip, is also reportedetly interested in the post. President Donald Trump, however, has endorsed Jordan.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted last week in a massive and historical shakeup in which Florida's Matt Gaetz invoked the Jeffersonian motion to vacate the chair. Every Democrat voted with Gaetz. 

Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, who opposed McCarthy's removal as speaker, has backed Jordan throughout this new, unprecedented process of choosing a new speaker while the House stands without leadership. She spoke in favor of Scalise and with respect for his work and position, but said that as Scalise is currently fighting cancer, Jordan was a much clearer, healthier choice.

Rep Thomas Massie also has pushed for Jordan. He issued a poll on X to ask constituents who they would prefer. Jordan was roundly the favorite.

Jordan said on Wednesday that he would offer Scalise for nomination on the floor of the house, but things were changing so rapidly that now Scalise won't even be seeking the nomination. 

The move wasn't entirely unexpected, as earlier on Thursday it was reported by sources to Newsmax that Scalise didn't have the necessary 217 votes needed to earn him the speakership.
