Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez announced that the suspected gunman who carried out a shooting at Brown University on Saturday, who "took his own life tonight," was identified as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national. He was reportedly found dead inside a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, sources told Fox News national correspondent Brooke Taylor.

Perez said that a video submitted provided authorities with a description of a vehicle "that was corroborated through a tip that was received to the tip center." The vehicle was picked up by Flock cameras, which led authorities to a rental place in Massachusetts and a rental agreement with the shooter’s real name.

Perez said that Valenti, 48, was a Brown student, and his last known address was in Miami, Florida. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said that the suspect was found dead with the satchel matching photographs released by authorities as well as two firearms and "evidence in the car that matches exactly what we see at the scene here in Providence."

Brown University President Christina Paxson said that the gunman had been enrolled in Brown from the fall of 2000 to the spring of 2001 and had been admitted to Brown’s graduate school to study in the masters of science PhD program in Physics. He took a leave of absence in April 2001 and officially withdrew in July 2003. He was enrolled only in physics classes, said Paxson, adding that he likely spent "a great deal of time" in the building where the shooting took place because the majority of physics classes have always taken place in that building. She said that he had no current affiliation with the school.

Authorities believe that Valente attended the same school at the University of Portugal in Lisbon as an MIT professor who was killed just days after the Brown University shooting. Valente came to the US under a student visa, authorities said, and received lawful permanent status in September 2017.

On Saturday, a gunman entered an engineering building on the Providence, Rhode Island campus of Brown University and opened fire, killing sophomore Ella Cook and freshman Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov and injuring nine others. The suspect fled campus and had been on the loose for days. Earlier on Thursday evening, authorities were seen surrounding an abandoned car that was said to have been linked to the shooter. Authorities are also investigating possible links between the Brown University shooting and the killing of an MIT professor at his Brookline apartment just two days after the mass shooting.

Authorities were seen at the storage unit with guns drawn. Taylor reported that sources on the ground told her the suspected shooter had a storage unit at the facility under his name. Video reportedly showed the suspected shooter entering the facility, but police were attempting to determine if he had ever left the building.
