Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders will be retiring from his position effective July 31, according to Toronto Star's Wendy Gillis.
Saunders has served as police chief since April of 2015. He is only the second Black Canadian to head a police force in Canada, having only been preceded by Devon Clunis of the Winnipeg Police in 2012.
Saunders has been in the public eye recently after he kneeled alongside protestors during an anti-racism rally in the city's downtown on Friday afternoon.
Saunders tweeted a photo of the incident writing, “We see you and we are listening. The Toronto Police fully supports peaceful and safe protests this weekend and always. We have to all stay in this together to make change.”
Toronto Mayor John Tory commended Saunders for his long 37 year career with the force.
"About a week ago, Chief Saunders came to me and let me know that he planned to retire this summer," reads the statement. "He has been a dedicated and responsible Chief of Police who has always worked to protect the city."
