Trudeau announces $1.7 BILLION environmental fund as part of coronavirus response

Trudeau announced that the government will put $1.7 billion towards cleaning up orphan and inactive wells in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.

Justin Trudeau addressed media outside Rideau Cottage on Friday in his daily message to Canadians.

Trudeau started by confirming that 125 armed forces would be making their way to regions in Quebec, after three requests from the Quebec government for additional help, along with help from the Red Cross.

Bell Canada also made a $2 million donation of N95 masks, adding to the already one million masks en route.

Trudeau announced that the government will put $1.7 billion towards cleaning up orphan and inactive wells in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. The wells, Trudeau says, can be detrimental to the health and productivity of Canadians, as the wells are no longer in use.

"Our goal is to create immediate jobs in these provinces," said Trudeau. "These investments will maintain 5,200 jobs" in Alberta alone.

Trudeau announced an additional $750 million towards an emission reduction fund, focused on methane, to create and maintain jobs through pollution reduction efforts.

Trudeau says in total, 10,000 jobs would be maintained amidst the pandemic, from these actions. The government will also work closely with companies to expand support for at-risk energy companies.

Trudeau announced today that $962 million to regional development agencies and community futures network to ensure small businesses get support needed.

Trudeau also announced $500 million to heritage Canada to help artists and those in sports industries, who do not have access to the announced help, due to how revenue is generated
