"I'm going to be going out tonight."
Trump was speaking to radio host Todd Starnes, where he said that he has even heard from Democrats that his crime crackdown in Washington, DC has been a success, and then added, "I'm going to be going out tonight, I think, with the with the police and with the military, of course. So we're going to do a job, the National Guard [has] done a fantastic job."
The comments from Trump come after he has federalized law enforcement in Washington, DC on August 11 and deployed the National Guard in the city. The move has been criticized by left-wing pundits and media, even as a week has now gone by in the nation's capital city without a single homicide, something that has not happened since March.
Attorney General Pam Bondi posted to X, "We’ve now made a total of 630 arrests and seized 86 illegal guns in DC. 53 arrests were made yesterday, plus 24 ICE arrests and 10 guns taken off the streets. Our incredible [US Marshals] even helped recover a missing child. Our mission to make DC safe again isn’t slowing down."
The Washington, DC police union touted dropping numbers in crime as the crackdown has taken place, posting to X on August 18 about the drop in crime rates.
Critics of Trump's policies have pointed to historical crime rates, which on its surface show a drop in crime in the nation's capital over recent years. However, a DC police commander was placed on leave after the DC police union reported that the commander and police heads were manipulating crime statistics.
The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the allegations as a lawsuit from an officer has said that officials would classify deaths as "something other than homicide" such as "accidents."
