Chutkan wrote in an order that an appeal filed by Trump’s team "automatically stays any further proceedings that would move this case towards trial or impose additional burdens of litigation on Defendant."
On Wednesday, Judge Tanya Chutkan placed a hold on proceedings in the January 6 case against Donald Trump.
Chutkan wrote in an order that an appeal filed by Trump’s team regarding presidential immunity "automatically stays any further proceedings that would move this case towards trial or impose additional burdens of litigation on Defendant."
On December 4, Chutkan denied Trump’s motion to dismiss the case, arguing that he had presidential immunity. Trump has appealed the decision to the DC Circuit, while special counsel Jack Smith requested the Supreme Court to take up the issue. The court agreed to take up the case and fast-track the decision.
"If jurisdiction is returned to this court, it will—consistent with its duty to ensure both a speedy trial and fairness for all parties—consider at that time whether to retain or continue the dates of any still-future deadlines and proceedings, including the trial scheduled for March 4, 2024," Chutkan wrote.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
