Two National Guard members were shot near the White House on Wednesday, with one suspect currently in custody. The status of the two members of the West Virginia National Guard is currently unknown.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrissey announced their passing but would later update the public in a post to X: "We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information. Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community."

The previous post read: "These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country. We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues. Our entire state grieves with their families, their loved ones, and the Guard community. West Virginia will never forget their service or their sacrifice, and we will demand full accountability for this horrific act."

Emergency responders and police vehicles were observed at the corner of 17th and I Streets NW, just northwest of the White House. Several blocks in the surrounding area have been cordoned off, and numerous officers were gathered at the scene.

In a social media post, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department said that one suspect was in custody and that the scene is secured.

“We’re aware of the incident and we are working closely with the Metro PD and other law enforcement agencies. The health and safety of our service members is our top priority as we continue to support citizens and visitors of Washington D.C.,” the DC National Guard said in a statement, according to NewsNation’s Kellie Meyer.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed in a statement to the AP that the White House is "aware and actively monitoring the tragic situation." She added that President Trump, who is currently in Florida, has been briefed.

Trump previously responded to the shooting in a post on Truth Social, revealing that the guardsmen were in critical condition.

"The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price."

"God bless our Great National Guard, an all of our Military and Law Enforcemen. These are truly Great people. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!" he added.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also issued a statement on X, saying that DHS is working with local law enforcement to gather more information.

"Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C.," Noem said.

From the pictures I've seen, none of the Guard troops are carrying long guns. Why, and can we change that right away?
