On Wednesday, longtime National Public Radio reporter Uri Berliner announced that he was resigning from his position.
Berliner was fresh off a 5-day suspension handed down in response to an essay he wrote for the Free Press in which he claimed that the outlet had gone from being a respected American institution to an out-of-control ship fueled by ideology and steered by far-left activists.
"I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years," Berliner wrote in a letter to CEO Katherine Maher, which he posted to X. "I don't support calls to defund NPR. I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay."
In his article, titled, "I've Been at NPR for 25 Years. Here's How We Lost America's Trust," Berliner explained where he believed the outlet had taken a wrong turn.
"Race and identity became paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace," Berliner wrote, noting that journalists were "required to ask everyone we interviewed their race, gender, and ethnicity (among other questions), and had to enter it in a centralized tracking system," and that everyone was "given unconscious bias training sessions."
He noted that despite the slide into partisan programming, defunding the public broadcaster was not the way to go. Change, he maintained, could only come from within.
Berliner's article went viral, and even prompted a response from Maher herself.
"Asking a question about whether we're living up to our mission should always be fair game," she wrote, "after all, journalism is nothing if not hard questions. Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning."
