The Biden White House has said that it supports Donald Trump's No Tax on Tips policy that Kamala Harris recently copied when she went to her campaign rally in Vegas over the weekend.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made the comments during a White House briefing in response to a reporter asking about the policy.

When asked by another reporter if Harris got the idea from Trump, the press secretary laughed off the question, saying that she would not answer for the Harris campaign, adding, “What I can say is this President, this Vice President, have always had the backs of the working people."

Trump has been touting the "No Tax on Tips" proposal since June, well before Harris or the Biden administration endorsed the policy. Harris stated on Saturday night during the Vegas rally where she endorsed the measure, "We will continue to fight for working families, including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers." According to The Hill, a Harris campaign official said the proposal would have to go through Congress and would also include an income limit on the tax-free tip policy.

Despite the endorsement of the policy from the Biden-Harris White House, under the administration the IRS introduced a “Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement” (SITCA) in order to more effectively tax tips. An IRS press release from Feb. 2023 reads, "The proposed SITCA program is designed to take advantage of advancements in point-of-sale, time and attendance systems, and electronic payment settlement methods to improve tip reporting compliance."

The program introduced under the Biden-Harris administration included the “monitoring of employer compliance” for taxes on tips, as well as “implementing employee tip reporting policies that are best suited for their employees and their business model in accordance with the section of the tax law that requires employees to report tips to their employers," according to the press release.

Trump has blasted the Harris campaign for taking the idea. “The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes!” Trump posted on Truth Social. “This was a TRUMP idea – She has no ideas, she can only steal from me. Remember, Kamala has proposed the LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN HISTORY – It won’t happen.”
