"I'm going to utter words I never thought I would utter in my life: we need Steve Bannon."
"It's going to continue happening, because now they're succeeded," Kelly said of the prosecutions against Donald Trump, who was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in New York last week. The crime, which is usually charged as a misdemeanor, could bring jail time for the former president and current GOP frontrunner.
Podcast guest and legal expert Alan Derschowitz, reacted to Kelly, saying "I agree but you fight a lack of a principle with a principled defense. You don't get down into the gutter with them and allow the pendulum—"
"No, no," Kelly said, "you know who we need? I'm going to utter words I never thought I would utter in my life: we need Steve Bannon. That's how I feel today! Bring it on! Get somebody who knows how to fight dirty calling the shots! We're losing! They're taking out our people! This is about the presidency!"
Kelly has spoken out against the conviction of Trump, saying that she believes that Judge Juan Merchan and Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg were working "in concert the entire time on one thing, which was to fulfill Alvin Bragg's campaign promise to 'get Trump.'"
Bannon hasn't always been kind to Kelly, who was a moderator during the presidential debate in August 2015 and was slammed for asking Trump about his feelings generally on women and disparaging comments he had made about a few of them.
In 2016, when the newswoman was still with Fox, Bannon criticized her as a "centrist." Kelly has called Bannon "disgusting" and a "misogynist." Trump called Kelly "highly overrated" after the debate she moderated.
As for Trump in 2024, Kelly said "And I am not going to vote for Donald Trump to be my husband... I need somebody who's gonna close the damn border."
Bannon, who has been convicted himself on contempt of Congress charges, may face jail time soon as he has been out pending appeal of his case. The DC appeals court recently upheld the conviction, and the DOJ is looking for Bannon to begin a prison term.
