Brittany Mahomes, wife of NFL star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, found herself at the center of social media backlash after liking a post from Donald Trump’s Instagram account.

The post, shared on August 13, outlined the former president's proposed 2024 GOP platform, which includes policies such as sealing the border, ending inflation, defending the Constitution, and keeping men out of women’s sports.

After users on Instagram noticed Brittany’s like on Trump’s post, she quickly faced criticism. In response, Brittany addressed her “haters” in an Instagram Story on Friday, though she did not specifically name those criticizing her.

"I mean honestly, To be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood," she wrote in her post. "There's no reason your brain is fully developed and you hate to see others doing well."

Following the backlash, it appears that Brittany removed her like from Trump’s post. However, users were able to obtain screen-recorded video and screenshots which indicated she had liked the post, according to Newsweek.

Much of the backlash and criticism towards Mahomes came in particular from fans of Taylor Swift, who have been following Mahomes after Swift began dating Chiefs player Travis Kelce. Throughout the NFL season, Mahomes and Swift were seen sitting together and celebrating during football games. Swift has been a public supporter of Democratic candidates, including an endorsement of Joe Biden during the 2020 election.

The incident also comes after her husband Patrick Mahomes declined to weigh in on the presidential race or endorse a candidate earlier this year. Speaking with Time Magazine in April, he said that he did not “want to pressure anyone to vote for a certain president."
