During a press conference on Friday regarding a curfew being put in place for a World Cup game, Brockton, Massachusetts Mayor Moises M. Rodrigues was confronted about the city’s apparent change of plans for their Fourth of July celebrations.

A woman shouted, "I have something to say. You lied to us. You told us we were gonna have a big celebration on July 4th, here at City Hall, fireworks and everything. You said [Fire Department Chief Brian Nardelli] didn’t so-called like it, but you were gonna have it.

"And now we’re down to a one-hour social ice cream thing, flag raising. Unbelievable! 250 years," she yelled.

Rodrigues replied, "Ma’am, I know that that’s not the reason why we’re here, but I just wanna let you know we were not able to get a firework company to produce fireworks for us. And we don’t want to do anything illegal in this community, so we’re gonna do the best that we can to celebrate the Fourth of July on this plaza tomorrow afternoon."

A memo issued by the Brockton Fire Department on June 2 said that "there are no permitted fireworks displays in the City of Brockton for the 2026 July 4th weekend." The memo stressed that fireworks displays "will be investigated" by authorities.

Under Massachusetts law, it is illegal for citizens to use, possess, or sell fireworks in the state without the required licensure, certification, and permits. Penalties include fines up to $1,000, up to one year in prison, or both.
