61-year-old Eddie Jawad is a father of five who moved to the US from Lebanon in 1981 and owns several gas stations across the Detroit area.
The incident occurred at around 10:15 am at the mansion near 24 Mile and Springdale Drive, per WXYZ. Jawad was seen in security footage inside his black SUV driving towards one of the gates on his property when the suspect, armed with a gun, emerged from between two parked vehicles. The suspect opened fire, and Jawad was seen driving across his lawn. Jawad fired back once in an attempt to warn the suspect that he was armed, and the suspect fled.
Jawad, a father of five who moved to the US from Lebanon in 1981 and owns several gas stations across the Detroit area, was struck with a bullet in his right leg and suffered cuts to his right arm from shattered glass.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido told the Daily Mail that Jawad was a "good friend" and a businessman who "speaks both from the heart and the mind." When asked about a possible motive for the ambush, Lucido said he had "no idea why anything like that would ever occur," especially in that neighborhood during the day.
Luciado said this was the first time he had heard of Jawad receiving such a threat and confirmed that Jawad has been released from the hospital and is back at work. "He's saying, 'Look, I can't stop a bullet from somebody trying to kill me, but I know my business has to survive, and I've got to go to work.'"
Speaking directly to the suspect, Lucido said, "Turn yourself in. Do yourself a favor. Eventually you're going to get caught." He added, "This should not happen in our neighborhoods, and I will not stand for it. This isn't a free-for-all. People don't have the right to go around shooting at others just because they're angry or offended. That's what the court system is for. This isn't the Wild West."
"It's not just about motive, it's about asking, 'Why is this happening at all?' A stray bullet could have killed someone driving by, walking down the street, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We don't need more violence in this world."
