Calgary police officer killed by car at traffic stop on New Year's Eve

Police are searching for the driver involved in the incident, as he fled the scene after striking the officer.

A Calgary police officer was killed on New Year's Eve by being struck by a vehicle.

Police say the officer was struck by the vehicle just over an hour before midnight. The driver was attempting to flee the traffic stop.

The officer was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The area of the road where the incident took place has been blocked off by police as they investigate.

Police say that the incident has provoked "unimaginable sadness and heartbreak."
