A male high school track athlete who identifies as transgender won the girls’ triple jump event in California by a staggering eight feet, reigniting controversy over biological men competing in women’s sports. The state has vowed not to comply with the Trump administration's policy rejecting the practice of allowing men to compete as women.

Jurupa Valley High School junior AB Hernandez secured first place at the Ontario Relays invitational meet on February 22 with a jump exceeding 40 feet. The second-place competitor recorded a jump of just over 32 feet. Hernandez also won the high jump and long jump events at the same meet, according to the New York Post.

The victory has drawn criticism from women’s rights advocates, including Jennifer Sey, founder of XX-XY, a group that seeks to “protect women’s sports and spaces.” Sey posted on social media, “This guy won the girls long jump and triple jump in a CA track meet over the weekend. He won the triple jump by 8ft. He’s really crushing it! It’s the giggly ‘feminine’ affectations that make him a girl, right?”

The incident is the most recent controversy surrounding biological men competing as women. It also comes as Senate Democrats prevented legislation that sought to prevent this from occurring from passing the Senate after it had already cleared the House. The bill, which failed to get the 60 votes needed to advance in the chamber, intended to determine Title IX protections ”based solely on a person´s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.” That was the assumed interpretation of Title IX until the Biden administration issued an executive order ot say that biological sex and gender identity, where someone self-identifies as the opposite sex, are to be treated equally under the law.

Last month, President Donald Trump signed an executive order threatening to strip federal funding from schools that allow male athletes to compete in women’s sports.

"With my action this afternoon, we're putting every school receiving taxpayer dollars on notice that if you let men take over women's sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations of Title IX and risk your federal funding. There will be no federal funding,” Trump said at the time. Trump has since promised ot withhold federal funding from any state that bucks the order. Maine's Governor Janet Mills promised to see Trump in court. Trump said he looks forward to it.
