Canada is reportedly in talks with South Korea to purchase 100,000 artillery shells for Ukraine at a potential cost of $500 million to help the nation fight off their Russian invaders. Canada is one of many countries around the world that have delivered weapons to Ukraine.
Canada, which has already provided Ukraine with military equipment, is reportedly working to purchase artillery shells from South Korea, which will then be sent to the Eastern European nation.
On Monday, The Korea Herald reported that Canada had recently asked South Korea for 100,000 rounds of 155 mm artillery ammunition.
While formal proceedings have not yet begun, South Korea has started reviewing whether Canada's request is feasible, and has come up with a number of possible solutions.
In one scenario, the South Korean military would send its ammunition stocks to the Poongsan Corporation, who would then send the shells on to Canada, potentially at a lower than normal price.
Poongsan would then be paid by the Canadian government, and produce 100,000 additional shells for the South Korean military.
As the Ottawa Citizen reports, the deal could cost Canadian taxpayers up to $500 million.
Canada has already provided Ukraine with the artillery guns that can fire the 155 mm ammunition, and recently announced that it would be spending $98 million to buy 20,000 similar rounds from the US.
Canada has been a staunch ally of Ukraine since day one of the invasion, and has sent a variety of equipment and aid to the nation, including anti-tank systems, grenades, rifles, machine guns, and medical supplies.
Other NATO nations have followed suit, sending weapons to Ukraine as its military and citizens continue to fight against Russian aggression.
The Trudeau government has also worked at a humanitarian level, providing assistance to Ukrainians within their own nation, as well as opening a pathway to resettle refugees in Canada.
