The Canadian flag was raised on Sunday evening for the first time in 161 days. On Monday, however, it was lowered again for Indigenous Veterans Day, according to Blacklock's Reporter.
On top of this, the new flag protocol insisted that the Assembly of First Nations flag be flown instead of the red maple leaf to commemorate the day. This protocol only took place on federal buildings.
"Raising the flag at this time will allow us to honour and remember important moments in Canada’s history," said the Trudeau government in a statement.
"Many discussions were held between Indigenous partners and the Government of Canada," they added.
The national flag has been lowered for five months now after the discovery of 215 unmarked graves next to a residential school in British Colombia.
"To honour the 215 children whose lives were taken at the former Kamloops Residential School and all Indigenous children who never made it home, their survivors and their families, I have asked the Peace Towerflagg and flags on all federal buildings be flown at half-mast," said Trudeau.
Since then, Conservative leader Erin O'Toole has requested that Trudeau raise the Canadian flag so that it can be lowered again on November 11.
The prime minister has not yet confirmed whether this will take place.
